Keeping a Server Fair: How to Detect and Prevent Cheating
Running a fair game server isn’t just about good rules—it’s about actively preventing cheaters from ruining the experience. Whether you host Rust, Minecraft, ARK, or any other online game, detecting and blocking bad actors is essential for server health, longevity, and community trust.
1. Understand Common Cheat Methods
Cheaters use different techniques depending on the game engine and server type. Be familiar with:
- Client-side hacks (ESP, aimbots, speed hacks)
- Packet manipulation (teleporting, lag-switching)
- Exploits/bugs (duplicating items, bypassing mechanics)
- Third-party software (auto-clickers, trainers)
Knowing what’s possible in your game helps you detect patterns faster.
2. Use Built-in Anti-Cheat Systems
Many games include native anti-cheat tools. Make sure they’re enabled and updated:
- Rust / ARK: BattleEye or Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC)
- Minecraft: Vanilla has none — use plugin-based detection
- Valheim / PZ: Rely on server-side logic and logs
Keep logs from these systems and regularly review ban triggers or suspicious flags.
3. Enable Logging and Monitor Events
Always enable and review:
- Connection logs (IPs, geolocation, proxies)
- Kill logs / damage logs (sudden headshot sprees)
- Chat logs (abuse, coordination of exploits)
- Economy logs (sudden gold/item influxes)
Use log analysis tools or lightweight scripts to flag anomalies over time.
4. Install Anti-Cheat Mods or Plugins
Addons make a massive difference, especially for Minecraft, Rust, or ARK servers.
Examples:
- Minecraft (Spigot/Paper): AntiCheatReloaded, NoCheatPlus
- Rust (uMod): BetterAntiCheat, PlayerAdministration
- ARK: Custom INI settings + Server API mods
Choose community-backed plugins with frequent updates.
5. Use Player Reports as Intel
Encourage players to report cheating via Discord or in-game commands. Set up:
!reportcommands (where supported)- Discord bots with ticket support
- Anonymous web forms or Google Forms
Investigate every report, even if it's not immediately provable. Multiple weak reports often point to real abuse.
6. Restrict Admin Tools
Your own team can be the biggest threat if poorly managed. Always:
- Use role-based admin permissions
- Log all admin commands (teleports, item gives, bans)
- Keep logs publicly accessible for transparency
- Don’t play competitively as an admin
7. Automate Your Ban System
Tie together logs, plugin bans, and IP blocks. Consider:
- Auto-banning repeat offenders by IP
- Syncing bans across your network
- Sending ban notices to Discord/webhooks
- Keeping a manual banlist backup
Summary
A fair server is a healthy server. While cheaters will always find new methods, a layered defense—logs, anti-cheat plugins, good admin policies, and active community monitoring—goes a long way. The goal isn’t just catching cheaters but making it difficult for them to operate in the first place.
