What does Breach do in Minecraft?

Breach is a mace-exclusive enchantment that reduces your target's armour effectiveness by 15% per level. At Breach IV it strips 60% of a player's armour protection before damage is calculated, which makes it one of the most consequential combat enchantments added in the 1.21 Tricky Trials update.

Understanding the Breach enchantment

Introduced in Java and Bedrock Edition 1.21 (Tricky Trials), Breach is built specifically for the mace. Unlike damage enchantments that increase your attack, Breach works from the other side of the equation: it reduces how much protection the opponent's armour provides. That scales far harder against high-tier gear such as Diamond or Netherite than it does against a lightly armoured target.

The distinction matters in PvP. A player in full Netherite armour has roughly 80% damage reduction. Breach IV cuts that effectiveness by 60%, dropping their effective protection to around 32%. That is not a minor dent in their defence, it changes the damage calculation outright.

Level-by-level armour reduction

Breach has four levels, each adding another 15% to the armour reduction. The chart below shows how much of the target's armour each level strips away, and the table underneath gives the same figures alongside roughly how much protection a full Diamond set is still providing once Breach has been applied.

Each level adds a flat 15% to the reduction, so the scaling is linear rather than diminishing. Breach IV is the maximum the enchantment goes to.

How Breach changes combat

Breach is not a straight damage upgrade, and treating it like one leads people to put it on the wrong build. It is a counter-pick, and it behaves accordingly. The three panels below are the practical consequences.

Most enchantments raise your damage output. Breach lowers the opponent's armour value before any calculation happens, which makes it uniquely effective against over-geared players and irrelevant against unarmoured ones.

The mace already deals bonus damage based on fall height through its Wind Charge mechanics. Stacking that fall damage multiplier on top of an armour strip creates a high-burst combo that hard-counters tank builds.

Breach creates a counter-meta. Heavily armoured builds that used to dominate faction and arena PvP now have a natural answer, which pushes servers towards more varied loadouts and team compositions.

How to get the Breach enchantment

There are three practical routes to a Breach mace, and which one you use mostly depends on whether you need any level of Breach or specifically Breach IV.

  1. Route 01

    Enchanting table

    Breach can appear when you enchant a mace at a level-30 table, which needs 15 bookshelves. Higher levels are rarer, so most players see Breach I or II this way.

  2. Route 02

    Loot and villager trading

    Breach can also turn up as an enchanted book in loot. Cycling librarian villagers is the most reliable way to target Breach IV specifically rather than leaving it to chance.

  3. Route 03

    Anvil combining

    Breach I plus Breach I gives Breach II, and you keep combining up to Breach IV. Every step costs experience, so farm XP before you attempt the final combine.

Breach enchantment compatibility

Breach shares a mace with most of the enchantments you would want on one, with one notable exception.

How much Breach matters depends heavily on the server it is used on. These are the four situations where owners notice it most.

Arena PvP

Standardised armour loadouts make Breach damage predictable. Breach IV with Density gives a reliable burst combo that competitive players build entire strategies around.

Factions and raiding

It changes the economics of faction warfare. Netherite armour used to be close to unassailable, and Breach gives raid parties a dedicated anti-armour role instead.

Tournament play

Breach is strong enough in organised formats to be worth a ban or pick discussion. Decide on a level cap early when you are writing a competitive ruleset.

Survival multiplayer

In PvP-enabled SMP worlds full of Netherite-geared players, Breach becomes a late-game equaliser for anyone facing a better-equipped opponent.

Setting up a combat-focused Minecraft server

Running a server where Breach and the 1.21 combat meta are central asks more of the host than a quiet survival world does. You need stable TPS under concurrent PvP load, reliable hit registration and fast world persistence for long-running faction maps. Lag during combat does not just feel bad, it breaks the enchantment mechanics outright, because damage is resolved on a server tick that never arrives on time.

Recommended configuration for PvP servers

  • Enable PvP in server.properties with pvp=true.
  • Set spawn-protection=0 for dedicated arena worlds.
  • Use Paper or Purpur for optimised tick processing under combat load.
  • Install an anti-cheat plugin such as Grim or Spartan. Breach burst damage makes combat logging and reach cheats more attractive.
  • Consider an enchantment limiter plugin if you want to cap Breach at a lower level for balance.
