The hardware

Why the Ryzen 9 7950X suits game servers

Game ticks, PHP requests and database queries are mostly single threaded. The 7950X pairs very high clocks with 16 cores, so latency sensitive work stays fast while background jobs still have somewhere to run. Cooling is what lets it hold those clocks all day.

PUMP Ryzen 9 7950X 16C / 32T, up to 5.7 GHz Dynatron AIO radiator Heat leaves the chassis, clocks stay up
Boost clocks are a thermal problem before they are a silicon one. A closed loop cooler moves the heat out of the chassis, which is why these nodes hold their clocks under sustained load instead of stepping back.

What sits around the CPU

A fast processor is only as useful as the board, cooling, storage and network around it. Ours are chosen so the CPU is the limit, not the bottleneck.

Built to hold its clocks

These are not OEM boxes with a stock cooler bolted on. Each node is put together around the thermal and power headroom the 7950X actually needs to run flat out.

  • Dynatron watercooled nodes Lower temperatures mean stable boost clocks, less throttling and longer hardware life under 24/7 load.
  • High end motherboards Gaming and workstation boards rather than low end OEM ones, which gives better VRMs, more NVMe slots and steadier boost behaviour.
  • PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage Enterprise drives with high IOPS give fast world loads, quick map changes and strong database performance even when the server is busy.

EdgeProt DDoS protection

EdgeProt filters at the edge with application aware rules. It understands UDP game flows, HTTP and HTTPS, and protects players without adding lag.

A2S caching for games

Our A2S caching layer announces your game servers closer to players across Europe and the US, which lowers ping in server browsers and helps servers fill faster.

10 Gbps connectivity

Servers are wired into 10 Gbps capable switching, keeping latency low and leaving headroom for backup sync, content delivery and streaming.

Virtualisation ready

The 7950X supports KVM, Proxmox, Hyper-V and other hypervisors, so you can run many virtual machines or containers on one host.

IPv4 and IPv6 included

Each server includes a dedicated IPv4 address and IPv6 support. Additional IPv4 blocks are available with valid justification.

Managed options available

Keep it unmanaged and handle everything yourself, or add a managed support plan covering patching, monitoring and incident response.

Network & Edge

10 Gbps switching with EdgeProt at the edge

Every 7950X is wired into 10 Gbps capable switching, behind an anycast edge that scrubs attacks before they reach the node and announces your game servers closer to players.

Where it runs

Racked and cooled in our own UK facility

A watercooled overclockable node only stays fast if the room around it is stable. We own the building, the racks and the hardware, so power and cooling are ours to tune.

  • Designed for constant load

Proper cooling, quality power and stable motherboards, which is what supports a 99.9 percent uptime SLA on hardware that runs flat out.

  • Engineers on site

Physical access to the machine means a failed drive, a wedged BIOS or a pump fault is dealt with in minutes rather than days.

  • UK data residency

Your hardware stays in the UK, which suits compliance, data residency and latency sensitive workloads.

Sizing, hardening and troubleshooting a 7950X

The CPU is fixed on this page, so your real decisions are memory capacity, NVMe layout and bandwidth. Here is how we would approach each of them.

  • 64GB DDR5: small clusters of game servers, several web sites, a few databases.
  • 128GB DDR5: larger game fleets, many sites, heavier caching or busier databases.
  • 192GB DDR5: heavy virtualisation, multi-tenant environments, large in-memory caches.

For storage, two NVMe drives in RAID 1 gives simple redundancy for smaller projects, while four drives in RAID 10 gives better write performance and extra safety. On bandwidth, think about peak concurrent users rather than monthly transfer alone: game hosting and streaming benefit from headroom on the port.

Against a VPS or cloud instance, a dedicated 7950X removes CPU and storage contention, keeps latency and throughput consistent instead of varying with neighbour load, and for sustained workloads often costs less than equivalent cloud instances.

Against an older Xeon dedicated server, the 7950X has much higher single core clocks, better performance per watt, and DDR5 with PCIe 4.0 for faster memory and NVMe. A single 7950X can host game instances or web containers that would need several older Xeon machines to match.

A dedicated server gives you control, and with it responsibility. EdgeProt handles DDoS at the edge, but the operating system and applications are yours to harden.

  • Change all default passwords and set up SSH keys.
  • Disable root login over SSH and disallow password logins.
  • Install a host firewall and allow only the ports you need.
  • Keep the OS and software patched on a clear schedule.
  • Separate services with containers or virtual machines rather than running everything in one context.
  • Monitor CPU, memory, disk, network and service uptime, and alert on thresholds rather than waiting for user reports.

Even on fast hardware, configuration issues limit throughput. Most problems fall into CPU saturation, memory pressure, disk I/O or network bottlenecks. Check CPU and memory first:

# Live CPU and memory overview
top

# Sorted by CPU usage
ps aux --sort=-%cpu | head -20

# Sorted by memory usage
ps aux --sort=-%mem | head -20

Then disk, which needs the sysstat package:

iostat -x 1 10

Then the network:

# Simple interface counters
ip -s link

# Active connections snapshot
ss -tulnp | head -30

From there you can tune application settings, increase worker counts, add caching layers or plan an upgrade if you are consistently near hardware limits. Measure first, then optimise.

Ryzen 7950X

Ryzen 7950X dedicated server FAQ

A VPS shares CPU, memory and storage with other tenants on a node. A Ryzen 7950X dedicated server gives you the entire physical machine: all cores, all memory and all storage are reserved for you, with no resource contention. You also control the hardware layout, RAID, kernel, hypervisor and security policies.

The 7950X has very high single core clock speeds and strong multi core performance. For game servers and PHP-based sites that lean on single threaded performance, it often outperforms Xeon platforms at a similar price. Modern Intel chips can match it in some tasks, but older Xeon platforms are usually slower per core and less efficient on power.

Yes. We provide Ryzen 7950X dedicated servers hosted in UK data centres with low ping across the country and strong connectivity into Europe. Your hardware stays in the UK, which suits compliance, data residency and latency sensitive workloads.

You can rent a pre-built Ryzen 7950X game hosting node directly from us. We handle the hardware, watercooling, power, networking and DDoS protection while you run your game servers, control panels and community. Pricing starts at £210 per month.

We include EdgeProt DDoS protection as standard with every Ryzen 7950X dedicated server. EdgeProt is built around game traffic and has application aware filters for common game engines, HTTP and HTTPS. Traffic is cleaned before it reaches your server.

Pricing starts at £210 per month for the entry configuration. Higher memory counts, additional NVMe drives, larger bandwidth commits or managed support plans increase the monthly fee, but pricing stays transparent with no surprise add-ons.

The 7950X is very capable for software based video encoding and streaming. The core count and clock speeds allow several concurrent live streams, transcode jobs or VOD workloads. Paired with NVMe storage and a 10 Gbps port it makes a strong base for a streaming platform. For heavier GPU based encoding, GPUs can be added to a 7950X chassis.

Yes. By default our 7950X servers are unmanaged so you keep full control, but we can provide managed options covering monitoring, patching, security hardening and troubleshooting. Managed plans are built around your stack.

Each server connects into 10 Gbps capable switching and is supplied with a bandwidth allowance suitable for game hosting and web workloads. If you need more, we can quote higher commits or unmetered options on request. The point is headroom for peaks rather than a low cap that chokes traffic when you are busy.

The common setup is to install a Linux distribution, secure SSH access, install Java, then deploy your chosen Minecraft server software. Many clients run several instances on one 7950X using screen, Docker or a panel. We can provide guidance on ports, firewall rules and recommended memory and CPU allocations per server.

If you run several websites, internal services, CRM, monitoring or client hosting under one roof, a 7950X can be excellent value. You replace several smaller VPS instances with one machine and keep all resources under your control. At £210 per month and up, many businesses find the performance per pound better than stacking mid-range VPS plans.

Yes. Memory capacity, NVMe size and count, RAID layout, network ports and additional NICs can all be customised. We build on high end gaming and workstation motherboards, so there are extra slots and ports to work with. Tell us what you plan to host and we will recommend a layout.

Yes. IPv4 is included and IPv6 support is available. Many modern stacks benefit from dual stack connectivity, and game servers can use IPv6 where the engine supports it. If you need specific routing or prefixes, talk to us about what is possible on our network.

We design our 7950X servers for constant load with proper cooling, quality power and stable motherboards. Combined with our network and DDoS protection, this supports a 99.9 percent uptime SLA. As with any hardware, monitoring and good configuration matter, but the platform is built for 24/7 work.

In most cases yes. If you are moving from cPanel or a similar panel you can back up and restore onto the new server. If you are moving from a VPS or another dedicated server, we can help plan rsync, database dumps and DNS changes to keep downtime low. Test on the new box first, then switch traffic.

All of our 7950X servers use NVMe storage rather than SATA SSD, but you can choose capacity and RAID layout. Two drives in RAID 1 gives simple redundancy; four drives in RAID 10 gives faster writes and extra safety. Heavier database or virtualisation workloads usually benefit from more drives and RAID 10.

Full free trials on bare metal are rare in the industry because of hardware and setup cost. Instead we focus on clear specs, honest benchmarks and support that responds quickly. If you want to test your stack first, prototype on a smaller plan and move to a 7950X once you are ready.

Ryzen 7000 series chips are built on a modern process and deliver much more performance per watt than many older Xeon platforms. You get more work done for the same power draw, which helps running costs, and the machine runs cooler under light load, especially with quality watercooling.

Commercial panels such as cPanel and Plesk require separate licences. We can supply one or you can bring your own. Free panels such as CyberPanel and other open source options run well on the 7950X. You are free to install whichever control panel fits your stack and budget.

We accept common payment methods for UK and international clients. You can pay monthly and keep full flexibility, or speak to us about longer term agreements if you want to fix pricing or reserve several 7950X servers for a project.

Look at more than price. Check the actual CPU model, memory type, storage type, network capacity, DDoS strategy and support quality. Many hosts advertise a 7950X but cut corners with poor cooling, slow SSDs or weak networking. Our focus is high end boards, watercooling, NVMe and a network designed for games and high traffic workloads.

Yes. The 7950X supports the hardware virtualisation features required by KVM, Proxmox, VMware and similar platforms. Many clients treat a single 7950X as a small private cloud, splitting it into several virtual machines or container hosts while keeping local NVMe speed and low latency networking.

You are free to run your own firewall rules on the server using iptables, nftables or software firewalls. At the network layer EdgeProt provides DDoS protection, and we can work with you on rulesets for game ports, web traffic and management networks. Private VLANs and separate interfaces can isolate traffic where needed.

Standard configurations are provisioned quickly once your order passes checks. Custom builds that need extra memory, storage or network changes take longer because we assemble and test the hardware before handover. We keep you informed either way so you can plan migrations.

For CPU bound training, data preparation and inference tasks the 7950X performs very well thanks to its core count and clock speed. For heavy GPU based training you would normally attach one or more GPUs to a 7950X node, or use it as a controller or API tier in front of a GPU cluster.
