Running a Rust server is a sequence of small jobs, and most of them come round again every month. The first week is setup: a working install, a seed and world size you like, admin rights and the plugins your community expects. From then on it is wipe scheduling, plugin updates on force-wipe Thursday, the occasional performance hunt when the entity count climbs, and the steady work of keeping the server listed, described and full.

These guides are written by the people who run the hardware. Each one answers its question in the first paragraph, gives the exact console command or panel label, and ends with what to check when it did not work. The screenshots are of our own control panel, but the convars, files and commands are Facepunch's and apply on any host.

Start at chapter one if the server does not exist yet. If it does, jump to the chapter for the job in front of you. And if you are weighing up where to run it, our Rust server hosting starts from £7.50 a month with the panel used throughout these pages.

Getting set up

From a blank install to a server your friends can find and join.

Admin and RCON

Owner rights, the console command reference and the tools that talk to it.

Plugins, wipes and performance

Oxide and Carbon, the wipe cycle, and keeping server FPS up as the map fills.

Grow your server

Listing, description, header image and tags: the things players see before they join.

Migration

Moving an existing server, with its world, blueprints and Rust+ pairings, to new hardware.

Quick answers

About these guides

No. The convars, files and console commands are Facepunch's and work on any host or a home install. Where a step uses our control panel we say so and name the label, and the equivalent exists in most panels.

In chapter order. Install and join first, then admin rights, then plugins and the wipe schedule, then performance once the map has filled up, and the growth chapter when you are ready for players you do not already know.

Each guide shows its own updated date in the header. We revisit them after Facepunch changes something the guide depends on, usually with the monthly update, and when a customer ticket shows a step is no longer right.
