What is a Linux VPS
What a Linux VPS is, and why most servers run one
A Linux VPS is a virtual private server running a Linux distribution instead of Windows, with its own dedicated CPU, memory and NVMe storage and full root access over SSH. Most of the internet runs this way because Linux is free, light and scriptable.
Full root, no licence fee
Root means nothing is off limits: install any package, open any port, run any service. There is no operating system licence to add, so the plan price is the whole price. Customers run everything from Metin2 private servers to Uptime Kuma monitoring on the same plans.
More headroom per plan
A fresh Ubuntu server idles at a few hundred megabytes of RAM, so a 4 GB plan has room for a real workload. The same plan running Windows Server starts with less than half of that free.
Managed by text, not clicks

First login
Your first login, step by step
The server is live in about 60 seconds and the root password is in your welcome email. These three steps take ten minutes and are the difference between a server and a secure server. The full walkthrough is in our guide on how to set up a VPS.
1. Connect over SSH
From a terminal on Windows, macOS or Linux: ssh [email protected]. Accept the host key the first time and paste the password. On Windows the built-in terminal works; PuTTY is the traditional alternative.
2. Add a user and update
Create a day-to-day account with adduser you and usermod -aG sudo you, then bring the system current with apt update && apt upgrade (or dnf upgrade on AlmaLinux and Rocky).
3. Keys and a firewall
Copy your public key with ssh-copy-id [email protected], turn off password logins in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, then allow only what you need: ufw allow OpenSSH, ufw enable. Add fail2ban and the brute-force noise stops.

Docker in one command
The upstream convenience script installs the engine and Compose plugin on Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux and Rocky. Add your user to the docker group and you are pulling images within a minute of first boot.
Compose stacks
A web app, its database and a reverse proxy in one docker-compose.yml is the most common thing our Linux customers run. The Advanced plan (4 vCPU, 8 GB) is the comfortable starting point for it.
