How to Make Paper
in Minecraft

3 SUGARCANE · CRAFTING TABLE · YIELDS 3 PAPER

Making paper in Minecraft requires just one ingredient: sugarcane. Place 3 sugarcane in a horizontal row across any row of a crafting table and you'll get 3 paper — a 1:1 ratio. Paper is one of the most important crafting materials in the game, used in books, maps, fireworks, cartography tables, and more.

Crafting Guide

The Paper Recipe

Paper is crafted by placing 3 sugarcane in a single horizontal row in a crafting table. It doesn't matter which row you use — top, middle, or bottom all work. The recipe produces 3 paper per craft, making it a perfect 1:1 conversion with no material waste.

No tools are required to craft paper, and no secondary ingredients are needed. Sugarcane is a fully renewable resource that grows naturally near water across most biomes, making paper one of the most sustainable materials in the game for large-scale projects.

Where to Find Sugarcane

Sugarcane spawns naturally adjacent to water blocks in most biomes. It grows as tall green stalks 1–3 blocks high, always touching a water source at the base. If you're struggling to find it, head to any river, lake shore, or beach — these are the most reliable spawn locations.

Rivers

The most reliable biome for sugarcane. River banks are lined with sugarcane in almost every seed — follow any river and you'll find it quickly.

Beaches & Shores

Ocean beaches and lake shores frequently spawn sugarcane, especially at the waterline where sand meets water.

Desert Oases

Desert biomes spawn sugarcane near any water source, making oases particularly valuable — you'll often find large clusters around desert wells and lakes.

Swamps

Swamp biomes have abundant water coverage and frequently spawn sugarcane throughout. The dense water channels make these excellent early-game sugarcane sources.

 Harvesting Tip

Always break the second block from the bottom, not the base. Breaking the bottom block destroys the whole plant. Breaking the one above it leaves the base intact so the sugarcane regrows automatically — giving you a permanent renewable supply from just one plant.

Sugarcane Farming for Large-Scale Paper Production

If you need paper in bulk — for bookshelves, an enchanting setup, or a server library — farming sugarcane is far more efficient than foraging. Sugarcane grows up to 3 blocks tall and takes roughly 18 minutes per growth stage. Unlike most crops, bone meal does not work on sugarcane, so automation is the key to scaling production.

 Basic Manual Farm
  • Dig a water channel 1 block deep
  • Plant sugarcane on dirt or sand adjacent to water
  • Harvest the top 2 blocks, leave the base
  • Replant isn't needed — base regrows automatically
  • Use checkerboard water layout to maximise plots
 Automated Observer Farm
  • Place observer blocks facing the sugarcane
  • Observers detect growth and trigger pistons
  • Pistons push and break the top blocks
  • Hoppers below collect dropped sugarcane
  • Fully hands-free — runs while you play
 Optimal Farm Design Tips
Water Layout

Alternate water and farmland in a checkerboard pattern to maximise how many sugarcane plots fit per water block placed.

Sand vs Dirt

Sugarcane grows at the same rate on both sand and dirt. Use whichever you have more of — there's no growth speed advantage to either.

Multi-Level Farms

Stack farm layers vertically to triple production in the same floor space. Each layer needs its own water source row and observer/piston system.

Everything Paper is Used For in Minecraft

Books & Enchanting

Craft books (3 paper + 1 leather) for bookshelves, enchanted books, written books, and books & quills. A full enchanting setup requires 45 books — 135 paper in total.

Maps & Navigation

Create maps using 8 paper + 1 compass for locator maps, or 9 paper for blank maps. Maps are essential for navigation on large survival or multiplayer servers.

Fireworks

Craft firework rockets using 1 paper + 1 gunpowder (plus optional firework stars for effects). Essential for elytra flight boosts and server celebrations and events.

Cartography Table

Craft cartography tables using 2 paper + 4 wood planks. Use them to clone maps, zoom out, lock maps, and add banner markers — useful for server map rooms and navigation hubs.

Banner Patterns

Paper is used as a crafting ingredient for certain banner patterns when combined with other items. Useful for creating detailed faction flags and decorative banners on roleplay and faction servers.

Villager Trading

Librarian villagers accept paper as a trade item in exchange for emeralds. On servers with active economies, a large sugarcane farm translates directly into a renewable emerald income stream.

Paper on Multiplayer Servers

On multiplayer servers, paper becomes a shared community resource that underpins several core systems. Enchanting setups require significant paper investment, player-run economies use paper as a trading commodity through librarian villagers, and large roleplay or creative servers often build entire libraries requiring hundreds or thousands of books.

Server Types Where Paper is Central
Education Servers

Students create written books as research projects and documentation. Large shared sugarcane farms become community infrastructure.

Roleplay Servers

Lore books, in-game newspapers, quest text, and library builds require enormous paper reserves to maintain.

Economy Servers

Paper-to-emerald trading via librarian villagers creates a viable passive income stream — large farms become significant money-makers.

Survival SMP

Full enchanting setups, elytra firework fuel, and community map rooms all depend on a reliable shared paper supply.

Frequently asked

Place 3 sugarcane in a horizontal row across any row of a crafting table. This produces 3 paper — a perfect 1:1 ratio with no waste. The recipe works in any row (top, middle, or bottom) and requires no other ingredients or tools. Note that you cannot make paper in a 2×2 inventory crafting grid — a crafting table is required.
Sugarcane spawns naturally adjacent to water in most biomes. The most reliable locations are riverbanks, lake shores, ocean beaches, swamp biomes, and desert oases. It appears as tall green stalks growing 1–3 blocks high, always directly beside a water source. If you're struggling to find it, follow any river — sugarcane almost always spawns along river banks in every seed.
No — bone meal has no effect on sugarcane in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition, bone meal does work on sugarcane and will advance it one growth stage. Because bone meal doesn't work in Java, automation using observer blocks and pistons is the most effective strategy for large-scale sugarcane farming on Java servers.
A maximum enchanting setup requires 15 bookshelves. Each bookshelf needs 3 books, and each book requires 3 paper and 1 leather — so you need 135 paper and 45 leather in total. That's 45 crafting operations at a crafting table, consuming 135 sugarcane. Plan your farm accordingly before starting the enchanting grind.
No — sugarcane can only be planted on dirt, coarse dirt, grass, sand, or red sand blocks that are directly adjacent to a water source. The water can be at the same height as the planting block or one block below it. Sugarcane cannot grow on stone, wood, gravel, or most other block types, and it won't place at all if there's no water adjacent to the block you're trying to plant on.
The most efficient design uses a checkerboard water-and-farmland layout to maximise growing plots per water block. For automation, place observer blocks facing the sugarcane — when it grows to 3 blocks, the observer triggers a piston that breaks the top two blocks, and hoppers below collect the drops automatically. Multi-level farms can stack this design vertically to triple output in the same floor space, though each layer needs its own water and observer system.
Paper is used to craft books (3 paper + 1 leather), maps (8 paper + 1 compass), firework rockets (1 paper + 1 gunpowder), cartography tables (2 paper + 4 planks), and certain banner patterns. Books are in turn used to make bookshelves, enchanted books, and written books. On multiplayer servers, paper is also a key trade item — librarian villagers accept paper in exchange for emeralds, making a large sugarcane farm a passive income source.
Your server is live in under 60 seconds. As soon as payment is confirmed, our system automatically provisions and configures everything — no waiting, no tickets. You'll get your control panel login details immediately. Make sure to check your spam folder if you don't see the email straight away.
No — none of our services require port forwarding. Your Minecraft server runs on our own hardware in our Norwich data centre, so we handle all the networking for you. If you need an extra port for plugins like Votifier or Dynmap, you can add one in a single click from your game panel.
Unmetered storage means you can use as much disk space as your server genuinely needs — there's no fixed GB cap on your plan. The only condition is that files stored on the server must be directly related to its operation (world data, plugins, mods, configs, backups). You won't get surprise charges for a large world or a heavy modpack.
Yes — enterprise-grade DDoS protection is included on every plan at no extra cost, including the free Dirt tier. It's always on, requires zero configuration, and your server won't go offline during an attack.
Our Minecraft servers are hosted in our own data centre in Norwich, UK — hardware we own and operate ourselves, not a third-party cloud provider. This gives UK and European players excellent latency, typically under 25ms for most of England.
Yes. You can scale up or down at any time from your billing panel. Upgrades are prorated so you only pay the difference. Downgrades take effect at the next renewal date. Your world and server data are never affected by a plan change.
We offer 24/7 support via live chat and ticket. Our team are Minecraft server operators themselves, so you'll get a real answer rather than a copy-pasted script. Average first response time is under 10 minutes. You can also find step-by-step guides in our Knowledgebase.
